The BCCI has decided to appoint Zaheer Khan as the dedicated fast bowling coach at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The role is considered crucial for shaping the future of Indian cricket. It focuses on developing the next generation of fast bowlers for the ICT.
This position carries significant responsibility. The selected coach will mentor young pacers who could emerge as the next Bumrah or Bhuvaneshwar. The aim is to build a strong and consistent pace attack for the national side in the coming years.
The role was earlier held by Troy Cooley, a former Tasmanian cricketer who also worked as fast bowling coach for the English Cricket Team. His tenure with the BCCI ended in December. Since then, the post had remained vacant.
Although applications were invited from February 9, reports suggest the board has already zeroed in on Zaheer. Sources indicate that the management is keen to bring him on board. An official confirmation is expected soon.
Fans have largely welcomed the move. Many remember Zaheer’s immense contribution to Indian cricket and his experience at the highest level. His understanding of pace bowling conditions across formats is seen as a major advantage.
In terms of numbers, Zaheer has played 197 ODI innings for India and taken 282 wickets with an economy of 4.93. In red ball cricket, he has featured in 165 innings and claimed 311 wickets at an economy of 3.27.
With vast international experience behind him, expectations are naturally high. Supporters believe young Indian pacers will benefit from his guidance at the Centre of Excellence. Only time will reveal how much impact his coaching stint will truly have.
