When Lucknow Super Giants appointed Zaheer Khan as mentor in 2024, many believed it marked a new beginning. The former India pacer had earlier worked with Mumbai Indians and was expected to guide LSG after Gautam Gambhir’s exit.
Reasons Behind Zaheer’s Exit
Zaheer had signed a two-year deal to plan, scout and shape the team’s strategy. But reports suggest his ideas clashed with head coach Justin Langer and team owner Sanjiv Goenka. Multiple voices in the setup became the main reason for his departure.
Disagreement Over Batting Plans
One key issue was the batting order. LSG had spent ₹27 crore on Rishabh Pant, making him the most expensive buy in IPL history. There was talk of Pant opening, but Zaheer disagreed. He preferred Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram as openers with Nicholas Pooran at No. 3.
LSG’s Poor Season
Despite these strategies, the team struggled. LSG finished seventh with six wins and eight losses. After starting with five wins in their first eight games, they collapsed in the second half, winning only once in their last six matches.
The Bigger Problem for LSG
Since Gautam Gambhir’s exit, the team has failed to find stability. Pant was given the captaincy immediately but results did not improve. While Zaheer wanted to build for the long term, the franchise seemed focused on quick success, creating a gap in vision.
What Lies Ahead for Lucknow?
Zaheer Khan’s exit is another setback for LSG. The team, once promising in its early IPL years, now faces uncertainty. The big question for the next season is whether they will rediscover direction or slip further behind the top teams.
