Coolie: Blessing or Curse? Aamir-Rajinikanth Combo After 30 Years
Superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming pan-India actioner Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is generating massive hype. With a star-studded cast including Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, Upendra Rao, and Shoubin Shahir, the film is slated for a grand worldwide release on August 14th.
While many are celebrating this as the first-ever collaboration between Aamir Khan and Rajinikanth, the duo had already worked together almost three decades ago in the film Aatank Hi Aatank (1995)—a low-budget Bollywood attempt at remaking The Godfather. The film flopped badly at the box office and was later dubbed in Tamil as Aandavan in 2000, which also failed to make any impact.
Insiders claim that even Aamir Khan regretted doing that film and has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with his own performance.
Now, in 2025, both legends are reuniting with Coolie, and fans are torn between nostalgia and nervousness. Will history repeat itself, or is this a second chance at creating box office magic?
Given director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s mass appeal and the genre, many believe Coolie might erase the painful memory of Aatank Hi Aatank and gift fans a solid entertainer with a powerful star combo.
All eyes are now on August 14 to see whether this Aamir-Rajinikanth comeback turns out to be a blockbuster or another disappointment.
