With Yash’s anticipated pan-Indian film Toxic, August seems to be an overcrowded month in theatres with the most anticipated biggies of South Indian cinema.
Suriya’s bilingual film Vishwanath and Sons, directed by Venky Atluri was the first film to secure the release slot in August. Although the shooting of this film was completed even before the release of Karuppu and it was initially planned for a theatrical release in June, the makers wanted at least a two-month gap following Karuppu. Consequently, they postponed the release by two months and it is now gearing up for a theatrical release on August 14th.
Usually, every year for Onam, at least two to three biggies from the Malayalam industry are released with the intention of utilizing the long festival weekend. This year, Dulquer Salmaan’s anticipated I’m Game directed by Chaman Chakko; Prithviraj Sukumaran’s anticipated film Khalifa directed by Vysakh and Nivin Pauly’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit directed by Girish A D, are lined up for a worldwide theatrical release as an Onam special.
While I’m Game and Khalifa are releasing on August 20th, Nivin Pauly’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is releasing on August 21st. Since the three big stars of Malayalam cinema are coming together with their most anticipated films, Malayalam audiences are already in a huge dilemma over choosing which film to catch on the big screen first.
Yash’s Toxic was the last film to enter this August race; following multiple postponements, the makers of Toxic recently confirmed that the film will hit the screens on August 26th. However, especially since all five films have huge expectations among the audiences, many trackers suggest that August is going to be a blast in theatres and that theatre owners are going to witness a massive box office showdown.
Also, they note that, other than Toxic, the rest of the four films are regional. Therefore, they claim that even though it is going to be an overcrowded release, all have the potential to emerge as successful ventures with a huge margin of profit.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how all these films are going to perform and which film leads in the box office collections and emerges as a winner in this race upon their release.
