Following the terrible failure of Retro, Karthik Subbaraj returned with his indie film, which is Dorothy starring Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth in the lead roles and it was released in theatres on 25th September.
Even though Dorothy received positive responses from critics, with many praising Karthik Subbaraj for making such a bold film, it did not land well with general audiences, who claimed that it felt flat and was just an average film.
However, despite the mixed reviews, Dorothy deals with sensitive LGBTQ+ themes, which sparked heated discussions on social media. Some even criticized Karthik Subbaraj, claiming he is spoiling the Kollywood industry by making such trash films and promoting the LGBTQ+ community.
Especially, many severely criticized Karthik Subbaraj by pointing to the climax stretch of Dorothy, commenting that he forcefully made the two lead actors fall in love just to win awards and showcase himself as a progressive director.
In this scenario, Karthik Subbaraj clarified the climax stretch of Dorothy in a recent interview, stating that in the climax a new girl was born, so audiences should not view it through an LGBTQ+ lens; after the transformation, Rishikanth fell in love with Sananth.
Furthermore, he pointed to Dhanush’s Thiruchitrambalam, claiming we have already witnessed how friendship turns into love and audiences can view Dorothy in the same way. He also mentioned that he was very clear from the start that this should be the climax for Dorothy.
In response to this clarification, while some people claim Karthik Subbaraj is just blabbering something and trying to justify that he did not promote LGBTQ+ themes, others feel that what he said is reasonable and that people should take it lightly.
