Laughable Demand for Dhanush’s New Film

Dhanush Idli Kadai tax exemption row

Dhanush’s fourth directorial, Idli Kadai, released in theatres on October 1. The film has received mixed reviews from audiences and is performing moderately at the box office, with collections showing an average trend across major centres.

BJP Spokesperson ANS Prasad has now urged the Tamil Nadu Government to grant a tax exemption for Idli Kadai and allow rural and government school students to watch it for free. His statement has sparked debate among moviegoers and political observers alike.

Prasad described Idli Kadai as a remarkable creation that reflects Tamil Nadu’s social, cultural, and traditional roots. He said the film spreads positive values, artistic expression, and messages of non-violence, making it ideal for students and young viewers.

Following his remarks, Dhanush’s fans welcomed the request and agreed that the film’s message deserved wider reach. They urged the state government to consider the demand, claiming that Idli Kadai promotes important moral lessons through cinema.

However, many others found the demand unnecessary. They believe that while Idli Kadai is grounded in local culture, it still follows a familiar formula seen in many Kollywood films. The themes of non-violence and traditional values, they say, aren’t new.

Viewers also argued that if tax exemption is justified for Idli Kadai, then several other films with similar themes deserve the same treatment. Apart from Dhanush’s name, they claim the film doesn’t bring anything unique to the table.

Some have even called the demand “laughable” and suspect it to be a publicity strategy by the film’s team to boost its theatrical run. Idli Kadai continues to perform averagely and faces a likely washout in several theatres.

Meanwhile, ANS Prasad’s comments have gone viral on social media, with many users debating his suggestion and sharing mixed reactions online.
