Suriya’s Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji was released in theatres on 15th May and has received mixed responses from audiences and critics.
Despite the mixed reviews, the mass sequences in the film and Suriya’s stunning performance connected well with the general audience. Consequently, Karuppu went on a rampage at the box office, collecting over 300 crores and emerging as the highest-grossing film in Suriya’s career.
In this scenario, today marks the 100th day of Karuppu and to celebrate this, the makers have released a special poster for the film. While the whole crew, including Suriya, shared the poster released by the production house, director RJ Balaji posted his own version of the poster, which features an image of him celebrating during the FDFS of Karuppu. RJ Balaji’s post quickly went viral on social media, triggering heated discussions.
Earlier, Karuppu was scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on May 14th, but due to financial issues, the release was delayed. During that time, RJ Balaji posted an emotional video addressing the delay of Karuppu, which created a lot of sympathy for the director and led many people to support him.
Then, after the film was released in theatres on May 15th upon clearing the financial issues, RJ Balaji celebrated it by screaming in the theatre during the first day, first show. His celebration in the theatre became a huge sensation, with many netizens feeling it was a personal win and creating numerous fan edits of the director’s celebration.
Everything was fine until Karuppu became a massive success, after which strong rumours started spreading on social media that RJ Balaji and Suriya were not on good terms due to a clash between them.
At that time, RJ Balaji was continuously promoting the film through interviews and theatre visits. Subsequently, some people started blaming RJ Balaji, claiming that the director seemed self-obsessed and was trying to project himself as the primary reason behind the success of Karuppu, giving Suriya a massive comeback from his sinking career.
Although things settled down after a while and fan attention shifted to Suriya’s recently released Vishwanath and Sons, RJ Balaji’s own version poster of the 100th-day has reignited criticism on social media, with people calling him self-obsessed and claiming it is evident in his behaviour.
They feel that his presentation of himself in Karuppu and now this poster clearly shows that he is trying to project the massive success of Karuppu was solely because of him. They also suggest that if another actor, especially SJ Suryah, had played the role of Baby Kannan in Karuppu, the impact of the film would have doubled, but RJ Balaji ruined it with an average performance.
Meanwhile, some people are supporting RJ Balaji, suggesting that it is normal to be self-obsessed and feeling that when his hard work turned into a huge success, he earned the right to celebrate it.
Ultimately, RJ Balaji’s version of the poster for Karuppu’s 100th day continues to go viral, sparking heated discussions across and many people are sharing their responses on it.
