American Airlines cannot catch a break from disappointing it’s passengers. Yet another account of a family of five facing a massive travel ordeal after landing at Chicago O’Hare with American Airlines has surfaced on Reddit.
Their connecting flight to Tucson, originally scheduled for 8:55 pm on Saturday, was delayed repeatedly in 15-minute increments until 2 am, keeping hundreds of passengers in limbo with no proper communication or assistance.
The family, which included three young children aged 11 years, 3 years, and just 5 months, spent the night in the airport with no access to luggage or hotel rooms. Airline staff offered no meaningful help.
Some staff were reportedly laughing, chatting, and eating donuts while passengers, including exhausted children, were stranded without beds or updates.
The gate manager admitted she was running between gates trying to find a pilot, raising serious questions about staffing and scheduling.
At 2 am, passengers were told they would receive an email with hotel options, but all options were already booked. They were promised a partial hotel refund if they found accommodations themselves, though without car seats or luggage, traveling to a hotel was not even safe for the family’s infants. With no choice left, they stayed overnight in the terminal, sleeping on benches and floors.
By morning, their rescheduled flight at 11 am was canceled. After enduring multiple gate changes, they were instructed to join a 400-person customer service line. At baggage claim, they were told it would take over four hours to retrieve their luggage and were asked vague questions about bag color.
Nearly two days after arrival, the family remained stuck at the airport, along with many others, turning the terminal into what looked like a refugee camp of stranded passengers. The passenger called the experience “absolutely horrendous” and vowed never to fly with American Airlines again.
