The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is preparing to take strict action regarding power banks on domestic flights. After a recent incident, the regulator is considering a complete ban or a ban on using power banks during flights.
The decision follows an explosion on an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Dimapur when a passenger’s power bank caught fire mid-air. The cabin crew acted quickly, preventing a disaster. IndiGo confirmed that no passengers were injured, and the aircraft was cleared for service after inspection.
DGCA is now reviewing whether to stop passengers from carrying power banks altogether or to allow only those that meet strict safety standards. The Civil Aviation Ministry is also working with DGCA to frame new rules and quality guidelines.
Globally, several airlines already have strict policies on power banks. Emirates recently banned their use during flights and only allows passengers to carry power banks under 100 watt-hours. The airline prohibits charging gadgets mid-flight.
Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Qatar Airways have also enforced similar restrictions. Power banks contain lithium cells, which can pose safety risks, especially when low-cost or unregulated models are used.
With rising incidents linked to cheap power banks, Indian authorities are expected to tighten air travel safety standards soon, ensuring safer flights for passengers.
