IndiGo’s Cruel Treatment: No Wheelchair, No Buses

A recent post on r/AirTravelIndia sheds light on an incident that has sparked concerns over both airline responsibility and public civic sense.

The incident involved a passenger with a fractured leg who had requested wheelchair assistance from IndiGo. Despite the severity of his condition, he was left waiting for over 20 minutes with no help.

Eventually, the man was forced to walk on one leg, painfully limping through the rain back to the terminal. The situation unfolded at Gannavaram Airport (GOP), and the ordeal did not end there.

It was raining heavily, and passengers were left to fend for themselves. No buses were provided for transfer, and there were no umbrellas initially. When the ground staff were asked about it, they responded that the umbrellas were inside a wagon that needed to be opened.

Once opened, chaos broke out. People rushed to grab umbrellas, some mistakenly believing they were being distributed for free. Fights broke out, especially among a crowd largely composed of low-income workers returning from the Middle East.

A video attached to the original Reddit post shows the man with a fractured leg carefully hopping over bricks laid in pooled rainwater to reach the aircraft.

The incident reveals two major problems. First, IndiGo’s failure to provide basic assistance to a visibly injured passenger reflects poorly on its preparedness and compliance with accessibility standards. Second, the public’s reaction during the umbrella scramble showed a lack of basic civic sense.

A combination of airline negligence and societal indifference turned a routine situation into a shameful display.
