A traveller’s effort to rebook a cancelled United Airlines flight turned into a costly nightmare after being scammed out of more than $17,000, despite calling the airline’s official phone number.
How the Scam Unfolded
Reports reveal that a Denver-based passenger contacted United to resolve issues with his family’s disrupted European trip. Initially, he spoke to a legitimate agent, but the call was transferred to someone identifying himself as “David.”
During a three-hour conversation, the traveller was persuaded to place a $17,328 charge on his credit card with the assurance that United would refund the amount.
Fraudulent Confirmation and No Refund
The man received a confirmation email stating the refund would be processed in 45–50 business days. Months later, no refund came through, and the email address, along with the charge under “AIRLINEFARE,” was discovered to be fraudulent.
Airline Investigation and Concerns
United’s internal probe revealed that the agent mistakenly Googled another airline’s number during rebooking assistance and unknowingly transferred the passenger to a scam line.
The incident raises serious concerns about call centre procedures, verification methods, and accountability. Experts stress that vigilance is essential, even when using official contact numbers.
