A passenger on a United Airlines flight has shared a troubling in-flight experience. They were seated beside an elderly woman who appeared to be mentally unwell and unable to speak English, making communication difficult throughout the journey.
Language Barrier Made Interaction Difficult
The woman carried a sign mentioning that she spoke Amharic. Despite translation attempts, communication remained nearly impossible. This language gap added to the passenger’s distress during the long flight.
Passenger Faced Continuous Disturbance
According to the report, the elderly woman repeatedly disturbed the passenger. She tapped them awake, tried to move their seat, and partially occupied the middle seat space. At one point, she even grabbed the passenger when they did not respond.
Limited Support on a Full Flight
A flight attendant attempted to assist but explained that the aircraft was completely full. With no alternate seating available, the passenger had no choice but to endure the situation for the entire journey.
Passenger’s Perspective and Airline Response
The passenger clarified that they did not blame the elderly woman, acknowledging her condition. However, they expressed frustration at being forced into the role of caretaker. Following the incident, United Airlines offered $75 as compensation. Whether this resolves the stress faced remains uncertain.
