Dhanush Kara OTT Verdict: Better or Worse Than Theaters?

Dhanush’s Kara, directed by Vignesh Raja, released in theatres on April 30 and opened to mixed reactions from audiences and critics. Due to the weak response, the film struggled at the box office and eventually ended its theatrical run as a commercial failure.

After the disappointing theatrical performance, several trade experts argued that the release timing affected the film’s prospects. Since Kara arrived during the Tamil Nadu state elections, many believed public attention was focused more on politics than entertainment during that period.

Some industry observers also felt Kara had the potential to perform better on OTT platforms. According to them, the film’s rooted storytelling and unique premise suited digital audiences more effectively. This created some curiosity ahead of its streaming release on Netflix.

Kara officially premiered on Netflix yesterday in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi languages. However, the film has once again received mixed reactions from viewers online. Social media discussions show divided opinions regarding both the story and screenplay.

A section of viewers praised Kara for attempting something fresh and different within mainstream Tamil cinema. Some audiences appreciated the film’s grounded treatment and considered it one of the more experimental Kollywood releases in recent months.

At the same time, many viewers criticised the film for its slow narration and uneven screenplay. Several social media users felt the core idea was strong but believed the execution lacked emotional impact and engaging storytelling throughout the runtime.

Discussions surrounding Dhanush’s recent script choices have also started trending online after the OTT release. While audiences continue to praise his acting abilities, some viewers believe consecutive underperforming films could gradually affect his goodwill among Kollywood audiences.

Despite the mixed reviews, industry observers are now waiting to see how Kara performs on Netflix over the coming weeks. Streaming numbers and audience retention will determine whether the film eventually finds a stronger reception on OTT compared to theatres.
