Dorothy Draws Praise After OTT Release
Director Karthik Subbaraj‘s indie film Dorothy starring Sananth and Rishikanth in the lead roles was released in theatres on 25th September and has received super positive responses from audiences and critics.
Even though the reviews were positive, with many people praising the acting performances of Sananth and Rishikanth, it didn’t make the expected impact at the box office and completed its theatrical run with an average status.
At the same time, since the film deals with a sensitive LGBTQ+ topic, some people who are against the LGBTQ community severely trashed Karthik Subbaraj for making this film, claiming that he was unnecessarily promoting the LGBTQ community in Tamil Nadu, which became a huge controversy at the time.
Following its average theatrical run, Dorothy started streaming on the Netflix OTT platform with a 4-week theatrical window on 23rd October in five languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. People who missed watching Dorothy in theatres are now watching it on OTT and sharing their reviews on social media.
After the OTT release update of Dorothy, many expected that it would trigger fresh controversies and that social media would be flooded with heated discussions about the film. Surprisingly, OTT audiences also highly appreciate Dorothy.
They consider Dorothy to be one of Kollywood’s finest films released this year and highly appreciate Karthik Subbaraj for crafting such a beautiful and bold film. Furthermore, they claim that actor Sananth deserves a National Award for his performance and are also praising Ilaiyaraaja’s music in the film.
Although most people are showering the film with positive responses, a few claim that Dorothy is a solid film except for its final 15 minutes. They feel that while Karthik Subbaraj’s intention to normalise the LGBTQ community was good, the 15-minute climax sequence was unnecessary and had that sequence been trimmed, Dorothy would be the best Kollywood film of the year.
With these super positive responses from OTT audiences, it remains to be seen how Dorothy will perform on the platform in the following days and whether it emerges as a successful venture on OTT.
