After its merger, JioHotstar has now become the most subscribed OTT platform in India.

Surpassing Netflix and Prime Video, JioHotstar, formed from the merger of Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema, has reached a major milestone by crossing 100 million paid subscribers.

This makes it the most subscribed OTT platform in India.

For comparison, Amazon Prime Video has 1.8 crore paid subscribers, while Netflix has 1.5 crore.

JioHotstar’s success largely stems from its significantly lower pricing. Its monthly plans start at ₹41.6, whereas Netflix’s cheapest plan is ₹149, and Prime Video costs ₹299 per month.

These low prices, combined with strategic telecom bundling deals, an extensive content library, exclusive sports rights (IPL/ICC), and a hybrid freemium model, have made JioHotstar a profitable venture, leading to this milestone.

Especially during IPL season, when matches are live-streamed on JioHotstar, the platform has seen a significant spike in subscriptions.

While these subscriber numbers are impressive, retaining users after the IPL season will be the real test for JioHotstar.

The price point is definitely a huge factor, but in the long run, content quality will be the key to sustaining its success.

Netflix and Prime Video have built a strong audience base with exclusive original content. JioHotstar is yet to establish its own stronghold in this area.

If JioHotstar fails to strengthen its original content offerings, it may struggle with retaining long-term subscribers, as most users might only subscribe seasonally for sports events rather than staying for the platform’s overall content.
