Kajol’s latest film Maa, the second instalment of Ajay Devgn’s Devil’s Universe directed by Vishal Furia, is set to release on Netflix India on 22nd August. The film had a theatrical run earlier this year but failed to create much impact at the box office.
Audiences and critics felt that the horror did not deliver the chills it promised. The psychological angle mixed with mythology struggled to resonate, leaving the film unable to connect fully with viewers. The theatrical experience did not generate the expected excitement.
Maa always seemed more suited for streaming, especially with its layered storytelling and emotional mother daughter theme. This makes its Netflix release an important turning point, as OTT audiences often embrace films that underperformed in theatres.
The question now is whether Maa will find a second life on Netflix. Kajol’s strong screen presence and loyal fan base could attract viewers who skipped the theatrical release. Vishal Furia, known for Chhorii, also has a reputation for mythological horror that works well on OTT.
If the audience connects with its themes of motherhood and psychological depth, Maa could generate renewed interest. Much like Shaitaan, it now has another chance to make its mark through streaming.
