He mentioned that it also discourages people from watching films in theatres and that the excitement of visiting the big screen has decreased at the same time.

No one is aware of the content that would be featured in the trailer of Sitaare Zameen Par. But it needs to have some amazing moments without revealing a lot of things, and this is the only way to pull the audience to the theatres.
In case Aamir follows his words and does not release the film on OTT for six months, there is a chance that people might visit the theatres to watch it.
