The latest film in the YRF Spy Universe, Alpha, was released with high expectations. However, the film failed to revive Yash Raj Films after the setback of War 2. Its disappointing box office performance has now triggered discussions about the future of the franchise.
Trade experts believe the YRF Spy Universe needs fresh ideas rather than an end. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said the franchise should be rebooted. However, he clarified that the latest failure does not mean the Spy Universe should be shut down.
Taran Adarsh also said Dhurandhar has changed audience expectations for spy thrillers, especially those centred on Pakistan. According to him, viewers are now looking for a different approach to the genre.
Trade analyst Atul Mohan said the Spy Universe has been operating in the same space for too long. He suggested that the makers should reinvent the franchise and even introduce villains from countries other than Pakistan.
Atul Mohan also stressed the need for stronger storytelling and a fresh filmmaking style. He said the makers should reduce excessive glamour, including bikini sequences, which were featured in Alpha with Alia Bhatt and Sharvari.
Roopbani Cinema owner Vishek Chauhan offered a different perspective. He suggested that the franchise should take a break for a few years. Once the spy genre loses its saturation on television and OTT platforms, Yash Raj Films could return with Pathaan 2.
Vishek Chauhan also recommended bringing all the major Spy Universe characters together in one film. He specifically mentioned Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Producer and trade analyst Girish Johar echoed the same view.
The blockbuster success of Pathaan raised expectations for the YRF Spy Universe. However, the performance of Alpha has highlighted the need for better writing, fresh ideas, and the return of filmmakers who previously delivered successful entries in the franchise.
The failure of Alpha has raised important questions about the future of the Spy Universe. It remains to be seen whether Yash Raj Films will adopt these suggestions or continue with its existing strategy.
