There was a time when comedy movies completely dominated the box office. However, that phase did not last long because everyone started copying the formula, and the genre lost its charm. Akshay Kumar, who was leading this trend, also shifted to dramatic roles, which led to a long drought of comedy movies.
During that time, many directors tried to reinvent the formula but failed. Serious and dramatic movies started to rule the box office instead. Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn tried to keep the genre alive with occasional Housefull or Golmaal movies, but those films only came out after long gaps.
When audiences finally got tired of serious movies, they began demanding comedies again. Actors like Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao tried their hand at the genre and succeeded to an extent, but their films were mostly satirical or message-driven rather than pure commercial comedies.
It seems like 2026 has finally brought the genre back to life, as we are seeing multiple big comedies this year. The streak has already started with Bhooth Bangla, where director Priyadarshan successfully brought audiences back to theaters. Next in line are two comedies coming in June, first is David Dhawan’s Hai Jawani To Ishq Hona Hai starring Varun Dhawan. Second is Welcome To The Jungle, which is the biggest comedy release of the year with a huge cast of 20 to 25 famous actors. Since it is a sequel to the 2007 hit Welcome, expectations are very high.
After that, we will see the return of Indra Kumar’s beloved Dhamaal franchise with its fourth part in July, though an official announcement is still awaited. It is going to be a summer packed with comedy movies that offer something for everyone. If all these releases turn out well, comedy movies will dominate the box office once again.
