Deepika Exits Another After Spirit: What’s Wrong?

Deepika Padukone Exits The Intern

The Hindi remake of Hollywood’s The Intern has faced years of delays, but production is finally set to move ahead with an unexpected change. Deepika Padukone, who was earlier announced as the female lead opposite Amitabh Bachchan, has officially stepped away from acting in the film.

Instead, she will remain with the project as a producer through her company, KA Productions, focusing on creative leadership and behind-the-scenes decisions.

The film was first announced in 2020 with Rishi Kapoor playing the senior intern’s role, but his untimely demise led to Amitabh Bachchan stepping in. Further delays followed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Deepika’s maternity leave, and both lead actors’ packed schedules.

Now, in 2025, Deepika’s decision to leave the acting role seems to be part of her broader vision to tell globally relevant stories while steering projects from behind the camera.

This remake will be the first of five productions Deepika aims to bring to life in the coming years as a producer. The makers have yet to reveal which actress will replace her in the lead role, and the choice remains under wraps.

Amitabh Bachchan will continue in the role inspired by Robert De Niro’s character in the 2015 Hollywood film. Director Amit Sharma, known for Badhaai Ho, promises to bring a fresh perspective to the story.

Deepika’s move comes after she stepped away from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit, making this the second major project she has exited recently. Fans are wondering if these decisions are purely creative or if she is slowly stepping back from the spotlight.

As these films head into production, all eyes will be on how she contributes from behind the scenes. For now, it seems Bollywood’s leading lady may be taking a brief pause from big-screen appearances and high-profile acting commitments.
