Tumbbad received limited attention during its 2018 release, but its 2024 re-release changed everything. The film earned more the second time and quickly became one of Bollywood’s most successful re-releases, sparking renewed interest in its creator.
Eight years after Tumbbad, director Rahi Anil Barve returns with a new project. His second directorial, titled Mayasabha, stars Jaaved Jaaferi. Though completed earlier, the film remained shelved for years without a release.
Six to seven years later, Mayasabha is finally ready for theatres and arrives on January 16, 2026. Barve shared a poster earlier, calling it a strange experiment and promising viewers a mysterious world linked to Parmeshwar Khanna.
The teaser is now out along with the release date. In an interview, Jaaved Jaaferi hinted at the plot. He plays a producer who launched many talents, including a woman he loved and married, only for her to later elope with another hero.
After losing money and trust, the producer ends up with only one possession an abandoned theatre coated in dust and silence. He develops a fear of mosquitoes, carrying smoke machines, wearing masks, and living in a strange routine.
He has a 14-year-old son who behaves oddly after growing up in this environment. One day, the boy brings two outsiders into the theatre. The story then follows what unfolds between these four characters in this eerie space.
Jaaved Jaaferi praised the script and called it one of the best he has read. With a cast featuring Jaaved Jaaferi, Veena Jamkar, Deepak Damle and Mohd. Samad, expectations for Mayasabha rise high after Barve’s past work.
