OTTs Don’t Deserve 4000 Crore Ramayana

Namit Malhotra on Ramayana for big screens

Producer Namit Malhotra, who is backing the ₹4000 crore Ramayana, has made strong comments about the importance of theatrical viewing. Speaking on Game Changers with Komal Nahta, he said epic films like Ramayana are meant for the big screen and not for OTT platforms.

Malhotra pointed out that OTT has changed viewing habits, with many people waiting for films to release online instead of going to theatres. While OTT can give smaller films a second life, he argued that watching large-scale spectacles like Brahmāstra, Kalki 2898 AD, or Ramayana on a mobile or TV screen feels like an insult to the effort behind them.

He compared the situation to cinema’s silent era, when films still found audiences despite limitations. Just as cinema evolved through different eras, both filmmakers and audiences must adapt today, he said.

Malhotra stressed that Ramayana is designed as a cinematic experience, not a streaming product. “This is an epic made for the theatre,” he said, urging audiences to embrace it on the big screen for its full impact.
