Producer Namit Malhotra recently appeared on film critic Komal Nahta’s podcast. A clip from their conversation went viral online. Namit explained how he would distribute the budget while making a film, sharing insights into prioritising production over star salaries.
When asked about a Rs 100 crore budget, Namit revealed he follows the 20-80 rule. He sets aside 20% for actors, writers, and directors, while 80% is spent on production and marketing. This approach impressed social media users, as it contrasts with the usual focus on star salaries.
Though Namit did not confirm this is how he is spending the massive Rs 3,330 crore on Ramayana, fans have speculated. Many international artists and technicians were hired primarily for production, including the collaboration of A. R. Rahman with Hans Zimmer.
High production value is reinforced by the involvement of DNEG (Double Negative), the eight-time Oscar-winning company led by Namit. Fans expect visual sequences comparable to films like Avatar and Avengers, given the huge VFX budget allocated.
However, some argue that the 20-80 split may undervalue writers and directors. These creative talents are crucial for making the story believable beyond the visuals. While star power draws attention, neglecting the writing or direction could invite criticism, similar to the backlash Adipurush faced in 2023.
Trade analysts and audiences are also curious about how the Rs 3,330 crore investment will be recovered. Many speculate that the film may need to perform as an international spectacle. Namit’s comments have sparked widespread discussion about whether Ramayana will succeed as Bollywood’s ambitious spectacle project.
80% of the Ramayana budget is being spent solely on the film’s production and marketing… quite impressive, considering it’s rare for a project where the male lead’s fee alone takes up more than 60% of the total budget pic.twitter.com/kBQhtKCh22
