India’s Greatest Film: Dialogue Changed After 50 Years?

Sholay Final Cut dialogue controversy

Sholay-The Final Cut will release on 12 December 2025. It includes the original ending that was not shown during its first release. The film was directed by Ramesh Sippy and written by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar.

The iconic duo Jai Veeru, played by Amitabh Bachchan and late Dharmendra, continues to hold emotional value. Javed Akhtar has expressed anger over a dialogue change introduced for the re-release. His concern is that the new line does not match the essence of the original.

In the original version, Hema Malini says “Bade nishaanchi lagte ho” and Amitabh Bachchan replies “Haan James Bond ke pote hai ye”. Akhtar revealed that in the re-release it has been changed to “Haan Tatiya Tope ke pote hain ye”. The change was made to add a patriotic note, but it has upset Salim Javed.

They believe the original lines carried more charm and would have felt more iconic. Fans also hold every Sholay dialogue close to their hearts. Many feel the magic of the film lies in its unchanged lines.

With the final cut now replacing the old dialogue, Javed Akhtar is questioning the reason behind altering a line that has lived for fifty years. The change has sparked fresh debate among fans and the film industry.
