Greatest Indian Film Ever 4K: Re-release on Dec 12

Sholay 4K Final Cut re-release poster

The restored 4K edition of Sholay will release nationwide on December 12, 2025. You will see it in 1,500 theatres, making it the largest re-release in Indian cinema. For the first time, viewers can watch the film’s original ending, which was changed before the 1975 premiere due to Emergency-era censorship.

As Sholay completes 50 years, this version brings a true theatrical experience for older fans and first-time viewers. The Film Heritage Foundation announced the re-release on X and confirmed that the restored film carries the original climax, now titled Sholay – The Final Cut.

The original ending shows Thakur avenging Gabbar Singh, a scene that stayed hidden for decades. The censor board removed it in 1975, calling it too violent. The restored cut now brings back director Ramesh Sippy’s vision in full emotional and dramatic strength.

Earlier this year, the film screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and earned strong international praise. With its legendary cast—Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan—Sholay remains a cultural milestone.

The film changed Indian cinema with its mix of Western style, action, emotion and unforgettable characters. As it returns to theatres in a massive release, you get a rare chance to watch Sholay exactly as it was meant to be seen nearly 50 years ago.
