VD’s Strange Case: Full Film Fizzles, Cameo Sizzles

Varun Dhawan cameo in Thamma wins praise

Varun Dhawan has officially made a cameo in Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s film Thamma. The actor reprises his role from Bhediya (2022), connecting both films within Maddock’s Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU).

After the reveal, social media was flooded with reactions. Fans pointed out that Varun’s cameos are receiving more appreciation than his recent full-length films. The actor’s brief appearances are now being praised as scene-stealers.

Varun, who made his debut in Student Of The Year in 2012, was once seen as Bollywood’s next big star. However, in recent years, his only memorable performances have come through cameos rather than lead roles.

His earlier cameo in Stree 2 from the same universe was widely praised for its energy and action. Fans felt that his short appearances left a stronger impression than some of his recent films.

Before joining the MHCU, Varun ruled the romantic-comedy space with hits like Main Tera Hero, Humty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, October, and Sui Dhaga. These films showcased his comic timing and easy charm.

In recent years, though, his grip on the genre seems to have slipped. His latest romantic comedy, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari opposite Janhvi Kapoor, received mixed reviews despite praise for his performance and comic timing.

Interestingly, the same Bhediya character that fans loved in cameos didn’t work as well in its standalone film. The mismatch between Varun’s talent and weak storytelling has become a recurring theme in his career.

Industry watchers say the issue lies in the writing. Despite having sharp comic timing and strong screen presence, Varun hasn’t found a script that truly matches his strengths. Fans believe that under the right filmmaker, he can bounce back.

Varun’s next big project is Border 2, the sequel to J. P. Dutta’s 1997 war classic Border. The film is expected to mark a major shift in his career and possibly bring him back into the league of leading stars.

Both audiences and analysts are watching closely. If Border 2 delivers, it could finally turn the tide for Varun Dhawan, taking him from cameo king back to box office contender.
