Anora Controversy

Anora was the big winner at the 2025 Oscars, taking home five out of its six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sean Baker, and Best Actress for Mikey Madison.

Anora follows Anora “Ani” Mikheeva (Madison), a 23-year-old stripper from Brighton Beach who elopes with the son of a Russian oligarch, Ivan “Vanya” Zakharov (Mark Eydelshteyn).

Vanya runs away from his problems, leaving others searching for him.
The film is complex and fully deserves the recognition it has received.

However, many have commented that the simplest way to win an Oscar nowadays is to include explicit content, referring to the film’s explicit scenes.

Some even argue that the industry is over.

While Anora does feature a lot of sexual and nude scenes, viewers must realize that it presents a raw and unfiltered narrative of a sex worker’s life.

You can’t make a film about a sex worker without some people dismissing it as porn or reducing the actress’s talent to just her body. The film is a story about the need to survive, and the struggle to rise above mere survival.

Anora tries to show that there’s a world inside that person, but unfortunately, people have only reduced it to its nude content.
