The U.S. or North America (US+Canada) market is mostly known for generating big numbers for the Telugu industry among South Indian industries.
Recently, Tamil films have also picked up in this region, and films with known and big stars started generating decent revenues, though far from Telugu numbers.
But there is a new entry into the North American market: Malayalam films, which were not even releasing until recently, all of a sudden, throwing a big surprise.
All three recent Malayalam movies did very well in this region by collecting an overall gross of $2 million, which is super impressive and big.
‘Manjummel Boys’ became the highest grosser of Malayalam in the U.S. (Total Gross: $1,421,586), and two other films, ‘Premalu,’ is close to hitting half-a-million (Total Gross: $487,451), and ‘Bramayugam’ (Total Gross: $346,571) too did well despite being a niche black and white film.
These three films, over the span of a couple of months, generated $2 million and are still running in theaters in the U.S.
It’s just a matter of time before we see Malayalam films posting even bigger numbers. The market potential is clear, and it all depends on the films that will be released for the rest of the year to capitalize on this newly found market.
