The upcoming Christmas season is set to witness a packed theatrical battle, with several Telugu films lining up for release. Among them, Champion has emerged as one of the most closely watched projects. Starring Roshan Meka and Anaswara Rajan, the film is directed by Pradeep Advaitham and is scheduled for release on December 25. The project is backed by Swapna Cinemas, Anandi Art Creations, and Concept Films, with Zee Studios presenting the film.
This film marks the second film of Roshan Meka, who is the son of Srikanth and actress Ooha. He made his debut with Pelli SandaD which was a hit. However, Roshan’s journey has been slow, making Champion a crucial film to revive his career.
The Christmas box office competition is intense. Along with Champion, films like Dhandoraa, Esha, and Shambhala are also hitting screens.
Even before release, Champion has scored a big success by closing its OTT deal. Reports suggest the film, made on a budget of around Rs. 45 crores, has secured a digital rights deal worth Rs. 16 crores with Netflix. Trade analysts consider this a solid deal for a mid-range film. It seems the reputation of the producers behind successful films like Mahanati, Jathi Ratnalu, and Kalki 2898 AD played a big role in closing the agreement.
However, the real challenge lies in the US market. The film’s breakeven target there is said to be around $700K, a huge figure for a film led by relatively new faces. Recent Telugu films with decent word of mouth like Raju Weds Rambai and The Great Pre Wedding Show have struggled to cross even $100K. This makes Champion’s target highly risky. Only exceptionally strong content can help the film reach that mark.
If the film connects with audiences, it could mark a strong comeback for Roshan. If not, the road ahead may become even more challenging.
