It Took 27 Years for Chiranjeevi: How Many for NBK & Nag?

Tollywood 100 Crore Club Nagarjuna Balakrishna

At the Tollywood box office, the meaning of success has clearly changed over the years. There was a time when a 50-crore share was considered a massive achievement. Today, with higher ticket prices, more screens, and a much wider market, a 100-crore share has become the new minimum benchmark for films starring top heroes.

Megastar Chiranjeevi was the first star in Tollywood to cross the 10-crore share mark in 1992 with the all-time blockbuster Gharana Mogudu. It took him 27 years to reach the 100-crore share milestone with Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy in 2019. He touched 100-crore mark once again with Waltair Veerayya in 2023. Recently, he once again comfortably crossed this mark with his Sankranthi release Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu. With that, he joined the elite club of Prabhas, Jr. NTR, Mahesh Babu, Ram Charan, Allu Arjun, and Pawan Kalyan who have already achieved this milestone. Surprisingly, even younger actor Teja Sajja entered the club with HanuMan, while Venkatesh reached it with Sankranthiki Vasthunam.

However, what has caught everyone’s attention is the absence of two senior stars, Nandamuri Balakrishna and Nagarjuna. Balakrishna delivered consecutive hits like Akhanda, Veera Simha Reddy, and Bhagavanth Kesari, but all of them narrowly missed the 100-crore share mark. Akhanda was expected to cross this milestone easily, but it flopped badly. His strong mass base suggests that one perfectly timed commercial entertainer could finally push him over the line.

Nagarjuna’s case is similar. Despite festive hits like Soggade Chinni Nayana, Bangarraju, and Naa Saami Ranga, his films have largely remained around the 50-crore share range. Fans continue to hope that his upcoming projects will change that. His lineup does not look that promising as of now, and it remains to be seen how he plans his next few years, as he is trailing far behind the other senior heroes.

In today’s market, reaching a 100-crore share is not that tough. With the right content and release timing, it is only a matter of time before both Balakrishna and Nagarjuna finally enter this elite club. The real question is who will get there first.
