A massive moment unfolded in Kerala on Monday when actor Dileep received big legal relief after nearly eight years. The Ernakulam court declared him not guilty in the actress abduction case that shocked the Malayalam film industry in 2017. As soon as the judge read the verdict, Dileep became emotional inside the courtroom. After stepping out, he spoke to the media and said that the entire case was a conspiracy against him. He thanked his legal team and the people who supported him during the long and stressful legal battle. The prosecution was unable to prove his involvement in planning the crime.
While Dileep walked free, the court convicted Pulsar Suni and five others involved in the crime. They were found guilty under serious charges including kidnapping, gang rape, and sexual assault. Their prison sentences will be announced on December 12. Three other accused individuals were also acquitted due to lack of evidence.
The survivor, who is a well-known actress who also did many Telugu films, was present in court when the verdict was delivered. She was kidnapped in February 2017 while she was traveling in her car. The accused held her captive for nearly two hours. Investigators claimed that Dileep planned the attack because of a personal conflict. However, the court ruled that this allegation was not supported by strong evidence.
The verdict has triggered widespread debate and emotional reactions across Kerala. Several actresses and women’s rights advocates expressed disappointment. Actress Parvathy Thiruvothu posted “#Avalkoppam Forever” meaning “We stand with her” and wrote, “Justice what? Now a carefully crafted screenplay unfolds.” Ramya Nambeesan and Rima Kallingal also shared similar messages, expressing her solidarity with the survivor despite the court’s ruling.
