After two consecutive hits, Love Today and Dragon, Pradeep Ranganathan returned with Dude, directed by Keerthiswaran. Released on October 17 as a Diwali special, the film carried massive expectations from fans and the trade circuit.
Despite mixed reviews, Dude opened strongly and crossed Rs. 100 crore worldwide during the festive weekend. However, trade experts feel that’s not enough for a film that was expected to outperform Dragon and set a new career benchmark for Pradeep Ranganathan.
The film’s momentum slowed after the holiday rush. Collections dropped significantly as audience reactions turned divided. While some praised Dude for its themes and performances, others dismissed it as an average entertainer that failed to deliver on hype.
This response contrasts sharply with Love Today and Dragon, which enjoyed long theatrical runs backed by glowing word of mouth. Both films grew stronger week after week, unlike Dude, which saw a steep decline in its second week.
Meanwhile, Dhruv Vikram’s Bison, which released alongside Dude, started modestly but gained traction after strong word of mouth. It now holds better occupancy in Tamil Nadu theatres and continues to grow in ticket sales.
Trackers predict Bison will end its run around Rs. 75 crore worldwide, making it a clean hit, especially in its home market. In contrast, Dude, despite its Rs. 100 crore gross, is considered an underperformer due to unmet expectations.
In the end, Bison emerged as the surprise winner, while Dude turned into a reminder that hype alone doesn’t guarantee box office dominance.
