The Independence Day weekend is considered one of the most lucrative periods for a film to release in India. Multiple films have been released this weekend, and on many occasions, most of them did well at the box office.
Last year’s Independence Day weekend turned out to be disastrous for Bollywood, as Aamir Khan’s much-hyped Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan turned out to be washouts. This year, it was expected to be much better, but as of now, it doesn’t look very exciting.
Bollywood is coming up with sequels to two much-loved films, Gadar 2 and OMG 2. Gadar is one of the biggest blockbusters in Indian cinema, and there are a lot of expectations for Gadar 2. But the promos and songs have turned out to be disappointing so far, and the movie looks outdated.
Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 is facing the heat of the censor board for its controversial theme of sex education. Akshay Kumar is already going through the worst phase of his career, and the future of OMG 2 also doesn’t look promising. The chances of an audience turning up in large numbers to watch a film on sex education with Lord Shiva as the protagonist are quite low.
Tollywood is coming up with Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Bholaa Shankar, which is a remake of the 2015 Tamil film Vedalam directed by Meher Ramesh. The songs and promos haven’t clicked well with the audience. Now a lot depends on the trailer and other promotional strategies.
Rajinikanth, who is facing a lull in his career, is ready with Jailer, which also releases during the Independence Day weekend. The film looks to be in that Petta and Darbar space. Director Nelson, who delivered a dud with his last film, Beast, has to come up with an extraordinary film to deliver a winner at the box office.`
Let’s see if any of these films can spring a big surprise at the box office.
