This week’s latest release, Hidimbha, comes with a novel story but failed to impress critics and general audiences. More importantly, it teaches two failure lessons for others who want to create different films.
Firstly, having a novel idea in hand is not everything. Hidimbha’s core idea around cannibals has extremely limited appeal, as the majority would be reluctant to watch such gore and uncomfortable scenes.
Imagine if the story is not told grippingly when you already have a very limited target audience. So, the lesson it teaches is that having a novel idea is not everything.
Secondly, when you have a novel plot, stick to it, and avoid unnecessary romance, fights, etc. No small film has ever created a sensation if the making is not honest.
Hidimbha has a serial killer plot, but the makers included everything else we see in regular commercial films. When you want to make a novel thriller around cannibalism, why not stick to it?
Hidimbha perfectly teaches these two very important failure lessons for other filmmakers.
