Kiran Abbavaram and Sri Gouri Priya’s Chennai Love Story is now ready to make its OTT debut. Directed by Ravi Namburi, the youthful romantic drama recently arrived in theatres and managed to find some audience, emerging as a decent success.
The film is now set to stream on SonyLIV from August 21. Interestingly, it will not be limited to Telugu. The film will also be available in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, giving it a chance to reach a much wider audience through OTT.
But the OTT release could be a more interesting test for Chennai Love Story than its theatrical run.
The reason is simple. OTT audiences tend to be far more critical. The atmosphere of a theatre can make certain scenes work through whistles, cheers and the overall excitement. At home, viewers have more time to notice weak writing, slow portions, convenient twists and logical loopholes.
That could become particularly important for Chennai Love Story.
The film revolves around Steven Shankar, an orphan from Nellore who dreams of becoming a filmmaker and moves to Chennai. There, he crosses paths with Nivedita, played by Sri Gouri Priya, whose marriage breaks down after being in a relationship for three years. Their lives gradually become connected, with Steven getting a major opportunity in the film industry with Nivi’s help.
Just when their relationship appears to be heading towards marriage, an accident changes everything. The return of Nivi’s former lover Ajay further complicates the story, leading to the central question of whom she truly loves and eventually marries.
The theatrical response may have been reasonably encouraging, but OTT is a completely different game.
In the social media era, a film’s long-term reputation is increasingly shaped by what audiences say after watching it on streaming platforms. A theatrical success can face heavy trolling once it reaches OTT, while some films that struggled in theatres have managed to find a loyal audience later.
That makes Chennai Love Story’s OTT journey worth watching.
If the audience connects with its love story and emotional portions, the film could get a second wave of appreciation. But if the screenplay’s weak points, especially in the second half, become more obvious, the OTT verdict could completely change the conversation around the movie.
For Chennai Love Story, the real test may begin on August 21 on SonyLIV.
