After multiple postponements, Akhil Akkineni‘s Lenin has finally arrived in theatres. Directed by Murali Kishor Abburu, the rural action drama has opened to decent-to-mixed reviews, but the initial box office response is encouraging.
According to trade estimates, Lenin collected around Rs. 14 crore gross worldwide on its opening day. While the morning shows started on a dull note, occupancy improved steadily with every passing show, suggesting that positive word of mouth and curiosity around Akhil are driving the film.
North America delivered a moderate start. The film grossed $287,000, including around $142K from premieres, making it Akhil’s second-biggest opening in the region. With the overseas breakeven target estimated at around $700K, the film has given itself a decent platform heading into the weekend.
In the Telugu states, Lenin collected around Rs. 5.5 crore distributor share (approximately Rs. 8.8 crore gross). Including Karnataka, the rest of India, and overseas, the film is estimated to have finished Day 1 with a worldwide distributor share of around Rs. 7.5 crore.
Trade expects Lenin to collect around Rs. 38-40 crore worldwide gross and nearly Rs. 20 crore distributor share by the end of its opening weekend. If achieved, the film would recover close to 80% of its theatrical business within its first four days.
With a worldwide breakeven target of around Rs. 45-50 crore gross, Lenin will need a steady weekday hold to emerge as a clean commercial success. The absence of any major Telugu release in the coming week works in its favor. While Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is expected to attract multiplex audiences in cities, Lenin is largely targeting a different, mass-oriented audience across the Telugu states.
For Akhil, the opening is significant beyond the numbers. After the huge setback of Agent, the biggest requirement was to regain audience confidence. Lenin appears to have made that start. If it maintains its momentum through the weekdays, the film has a realistic chance of not only achieving breakeven but also becoming the big box office hit Akhil has been waiting for.
