Shocking Box Office Revolution of Malayalam Cinema

Malayalam cinema box office success

Malayalam cinema has quietly emerged as one of India’s biggest box office success stories. The industry has always been known for its strong storytelling and acclaimed filmmakers. In recent years, its commercial success has expanded rapidly across India and international markets.

According to industry estimates by Ormax Media, Malayalam films contributed 10 percent of India’s total box office collections in 2024, generating around ₹1,165 crore. This marked a significant increase in market share and placed the industry on par with Hollywood releases in India.

Several films played a key role in this growth. Manjummel Boys grossed around ₹157 crore across India, while Aavesham earned nearly ₹100 crore. Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, also performed strongly with collections of approximately ₹95 crore.

The momentum continued in 2025 as Malayalam cinema maintained a 9 percent share of the Indian box office with collections of about ₹1,230 crore. Among the year’s biggest hits were Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra with ₹145 crore, Thudarum with ₹140 crore, and L2: Empuraan with collections of around ₹115 crore.

Despite competing with the much larger Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil film industries, Malayalam cinema has strengthened its position through positive word of mouth and growing pan-India acceptance. Its content-driven approach has helped attract audiences beyond its traditional market.

International markets have also become a major source of revenue. Countries across the Gulf Cooperation Council, especially Saudi Arabia and the UAE, continue to contribute significantly because of the large Malayali diaspora. For several films, collections from the Gulf have matched or even surpassed earnings from Kerala.

The industry’s strong run has continued into 2026. Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3 has reportedly crossed ₹238 crore worldwide, with nearly ₹125 crore coming from India. Another major success, Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros, has collected around ₹235 crore globally.

Malayalam cinema has firmly established itself as one of India’s most influential and fastest-growing film industries. With consistent critical acclaim and rising commercial success, the industry continues to expand its reach across domestic and international markets.
