Tamil cinema legends Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are finally preparing to work together again after more than four decades. While both superstars have shared a close friendship over the years and worked together in several films during the early stages of their careers, they stopped appearing together on screen long ago. That is why the recent developments involving the two icons have generated enormous excitement among fans.
Interestingly, there are actually two separate projects being planned.
One is a film where Rajinikanth will play the lead under Kamal Haasan’s production banner, Raj Kamal Films International. The other is a much bigger project that will reportedly feature both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan together as lead actors, with Nelson Dilipkumar expected to direct it.
However, before that ambitious multi-starrer takes shape, Rajinikanth’s film under Kamal’s banner has quietly taken an interesting turn. The project initially faced multiple setbacks.
First, director Sundar C. was associated with the film before eventually moving away. Later, director Cibi Chakaravarthi was brought on board. But that collaboration also failed to materialize. Eventually, Rajinikanth reportedly agreed to work with Ashwath Marimuthu, the director of Oh My Kadavule and Dragon.
Although the makers are yet to make an official announcement, industry circles suggest that the project has already moved beyond the discussion stage. In fact, reports indicate that shooting has quietly begun in Chennai without any formal launch event or publicity.
Interestingly, Rajinikanth himself is not said to be part of the current schedule. The production is reportedly filming scenes involving other actors while preparations continue for the superstar’s portions.
But perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this story involves Cibi Chakaravarthi.
Ordinarily, losing a Rajinikanth project would be considered a huge blow for any director. However, insiders suggest the script that failed to impress Rajinikanth reportedly caught Kamal Haasan’s attention.
As a result, Raj Kamal Films International has apparently decided to continue working with Cibi instead of parting ways with him completely.
Reports suggest the script is now being further developed under Kamal’s supervision. If everything falls into place, Kamal himself could potentially headline the film. If not, another senior star may step into the project.
Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have always displayed very different tastes when it comes to selecting scripts. Rajini generally gravitates towards larger-than-life commercial entertainers that connect with mass audiences, while Kamal has often preferred unconventional, experimental, and character-driven stories.
Therefore, if a script failed to excite Rajinikanth but impressed Kamal, many are assuming it may belong more to the latter category.
For now, all eyes remain on Rajinikanth’s film with Ashwath Marimuthu and the long-awaited Rajini-Kamal collaboration with Nelson Dilipkumar.
But quietly in the background, Cibi Chakaravarthi’s “rejected” script may be developing into an entirely different opportunity.
