For a change, it is the senior heroes who seem to be having the last laugh at the box office this year. Chiranjeevi’s Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu (MSG) started the year on a strong note, and Ravi Teja’s Irumudi and Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 have continued the strong run. At a time when the younger generation is finding it difficult to make a consistent impact, the seniors are giving audiences reasons to turn up at theatres.
What makes this interesting is that these are stars who have been entertaining audiences for decades, but the craze around their films is still intact. Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 crossing Rs 500 crore worldwide within five days shows the kind of pull he continues to enjoy. Even after so many years in the industry, these senior heroes are still drawing crowds to theatres.
The year has not been equally rewarding for the younger heroes. There have been releases and some promising attempts, but the big box-office moments have been harder to come by. That does not mean the younger stars are out of the race, but the seniors have certainly grabbed more attention.
Now, all eyes are on Venkatesh’s AK47, Balakrishna’s Dada and Nagarjuna’s King100. If the senior stars continue this run, the question of whether 2026 belongs to them will become even more interesting.
