Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2 is releasing next week on April 28th. The first part was a big hit in Tamil, though it tanked in other languages, including Telugu, where it was expected to do well.
Now the Tamil media is spewing venom on the Telugu Industry and audience that Telugu people are not supporting PS2. They are making allegations that the Telugu audience is trying to degrade Tamil Cinema by targetting Ponniyin Selvan. Recently during the Tamil promotions of PS 2, one Tamil journalist asked a question to Mani Ratnam along similar lines.
Tamil people must realize that after their local markets, it has always been the Telugu market that generates the maximum revenue for Tamil films. Despite Telugu films not getting equal love and adulation from Tamil audiences, we have always received their films with open arms. Films like I (Manoharudu), 24, Aparichitudu, and Yuganiki Okkadu were bigger hits in Telugu than in Tamil.
After Baahubali and RRR, the Telugu film industry is leaps and bounds ahead of the Tamil industry. There is no competition between both industries anymore.
Ponniyin Selvan’s content was not good enough for the Telugu audience, and hence it was rejected. And that’s why there is no anticipation for its second part in Telugu states. The makers are also not showing any interest in promoting PS 2 in Telugu. So it’s silly that the Tamil media is blaming and hating Telugu people.
On the flip side, Mani Ratnam gave a graceful answer to that journalist and shut his mouth. He said, “Everyone has an opinion and taste, and we are no one to question them. We are confident and proud about our project, and that’s what matters.”
