When it comes to modern urban comedy, Tharun Bhascker is often the first name that comes to mind. He delivered well received films like Pelli Choopulu, Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi and Keeda Cola.
The concern around Tharun has been consistency. He directs a film and then shifts focus to acting or web series, instead of maintaining a steady directorial momentum.
Now, he is reportedly working on Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi 2. The sequel could become a proper Gen Z comedy if executed well.
With several young directors struggling in the comedy space, there is a clear opportunity. Tharun’s unique narration style and natural humour give him an advantage.
If he focuses consistently on direction, he can dominate the urban comedy genre. The space is open and waiting for strong content.
At the same time, Ram AbbaRaju has shown promise with Samajavaragamana and Nari Naari Naduma Murari. He too has potential but needs steady output to enter the top league.
