One serious disappointment Tollywood felt over the past year was that none of its pan-India films managed to create extraordinary results on a national scale. Even though OG collected around the Rs. 300 crore mark, Akhanda 2 carried massive expectations, and fans pinned huge hopes on War 2. However, none of these films managed to break into India’s biggest blockbusters list. OG and Akhanda 2 struggled to collect even in lakhs in Hindi, while War 2 turned out to be a terrible film with terrible results. This left movie lovers feeling that Tollywood grossly underperformed in terms of pan-India dominance.
However, 2026 looks completely different and far more promising. The lineup appears strong, ambitious, and filled with big budget projects involving investments running into thousands of crores. Movie lovers are eagerly waiting for The Raja Saab to kick off this new phase. Since this marks the first time Prabhas is doing a full-fledged horror film, expectations are high. The release trailer has created some buzz that the content might deliver. As of now, pan-India penetration looks tough unless the content is extraordinary.
The collaboration between Jr. NTR and Prashanth Neel on Dragon has generated enormous buzz. Although the makers announced a summer release, industry circles still feel the timeline could be tight. Meanwhile, Peddi starring Ram Charan gained nationwide attention thanks to the viral success of the song Chikiri Chikiri, leading to strong offers from Bollywood buyers. Peddi might be the one that could surprise at the box office this year.
Nani’s The Paradise is also aiming higher by exploring international collaborations. At the same time, Fauzi starring Prabhas and directed by Hanu Raghavapudi is expected to release this year under Mythri Movie Makers, though the date is yet to be announced.
Chiranjeevi’s Viswambhara faced heavy delays due to visual effects work and will announce its release only after full satisfaction. Swayambhu starring Nikhil Siddhartha surprised everyone with its making video. If its period setup connects with the Hindi audience, it could turn out to be another Karthikeya 2.
Prabhas’s Spirit is rumored for a December release, though confirmation is still pending. Balakrishna’s NBK 111 with Gopichand Malineni is also shaping up as a pan-India project.
If all these films release on schedule, theatres are expected to witness an unprecedented festive boom, marking 2026 as a defining year for Tollywood. That said, Bollywood may dominate strongly even in 2026 with films like Ramayana, Dhurandhar 2, King, Love and War, and others carrying huge hype and potential. Unless these films severely underperform and Telugu films deliver some shocking overperformance, Bollywood may once again stay ahead in 2026. The tables are expected to turn in 2027 with the Allu Arjun-Atlee sci-fi entertainer and Rajamouli’s Varanasi which are expected to do collect mammoth numbers at the box office.
