Anil Ravipudi

After the blockbuster run of Venkatesh and Anil Ravipudi’s Sankranthiki Vasthunnam earlier this Sankranthi season, not a single Telugu film has clicked to that degree.

We have had medium range hits like Thandel and others, but none could pull the audience to the theatres quite in the range of Sankranthiki Vasthunnam.

The ideological difference that is coming up here is that the kind of films that are being made are not entirely catering to the wider sections of the audience.

For instance, we have Nani’s HIT 3 coming up and if we consider Nani’s acceptance amongst neutrals and the action oriented theme, it is primarily catering to the younger and action loving population but not to all.

It must be noted that we are short of commercial directors who can bring all sections of the audience to the theatres.

Back in the day, it was Srinu Vaitla who was doing it consistently and it is followed by Anil Ravipudi. The general opinion that Anil might not be quite in the range of Srinu when it comes to making timeless classic comedies, but he is certainly able to fill in the gap.

It has become a general perception now that Anil’s films can happily be watched in theatres for the family audience. This is the kind of positive assurance that is missing in the case of other directors and even films these days.

Anil is the only trusted director for the family audience, and he is able to pull the family folk all on his own. Considering the current slump in Tollywood, it appears that the industry perhaps needs another comedy oriented film director like Anil.

Anil has also safely started to target the Sankranti season for his films. We can’t expect him to do two films per year either. So it has to be seen when Tollywood will find another comedy oriented director like Anil now.
