Tollywood Must Capture “Small” Space Too?

Telugu cinema needs more small-budget films

The Telugu film industry is one of the biggest commercial industries in Indian cinema. The revenue generated by Tollywood is significantly higher than that of other South Indian film industries. However, there is another important aspect that deserves attention.

Tollywood has gradually moved away from producing small-budget feel-good films. Quality entertainers like Pelli Choopulu, Sammohanam and similar films have become increasingly rare. Most leading heroes and big directors are now focusing on pan-India projects with massive production budgets and lengthy shooting schedules.

Many movie enthusiasts are now commenting that films like Baththa and Dorothy in Tamil cinema are becoming difficult to make in Telugu. There is some truth to this observation, as several young filmmakers are increasingly ambitious and prefer large-scale filmmaking over smaller projects.

However, it is important for the overall film market and trade that big-budget films perform well commercially. Consistent theatrical success can bring audiences back to cinemas and create a favourable environment for smaller films. This could encourage filmmakers to explore different stories and genres.

Tollywood has several young filmmakers, including Tarun Bhaskar, Hasith Goli and possibly Aditya Hasan, who can help revive this space. Ultimately, delivering a major commercial hit with a small-budget film can create the same impact and positive prospects as a big-budget project. That is an important reality the industry needs to recognise.
