Whenever films like Baththa and Dorothy come up, some are quick to ask why Telugu cinema cannot make films like these. But there is another side to this argument that deserves attention. Even in their original markets, good films do not automatically become big box-office hits. So comparing their theatrical performance with Telugu cinema may not be the right starting point.
The bigger question is: where are the next generation of directors in Tollywood?
Telugu cinema has no shortage of heroes. New actors are entering the industry, established stars are experimenting with different subjects, and production houses are announcing films regularly. But when it comes to directors with the potential to become the next SS Rajamouli, Trivikram Srinivas or Sukumar, the list suddenly looks much shorter.
The gap is particularly noticeable in genres like romantic comedies. When was the last time a new Telugu director delivered a genuinely refreshing rom-com that made audiences fall in love with the genre again? A good love story does not need a big star or a massive budget. It needs interesting characters, natural humour and emotions that audiences can relate to.
That is where Tollywood needs to look at itself. The industry keeps searching for new heroes, but perhaps it should also focus on finding and encouraging new storytellers. More than another hero, Telugu cinema needs directors who can bring something fresh to the screen.
