Tovino Thomas built a solid following in Malayalam cinema, and during the COVID phase, many Telugu audiences discovered his films through OTT platforms with subtitles.
His latest film Pallichattambi was also released in Telugu. But even at a basic level, the makers did not adapt it for the market, not even the title was changed to suit Telugu audiences.
The result has been disastrous.
If you look at the pattern, a worrying trend is starting to emerge, especially for Telugu producers. Tovino Thomas films are turning out to be a horror for Telugu producers.
One of the earlier setbacks was Adrishya Jalakangal, directed by Bijukumar Damodharan and produced by Mythri Movie Makers. The film failed not just in Telugu but also in Malayalam.
Then came Nadikar, a Malayalam comedy-drama, again produced by Mythri Movie Makers. That too failed to deliver, adding another loss for Telugu investors involved in Tovino’s projects.
Now, Pallichattambi, produced by C Qube Bros Entertainment, has followed the same path. Despite being marketed with a strong angle as a real-life story from Kerala for Telugu audiences, it failed to generate even minimum box office collections. The film ended up as a washout in both Telugu and Malayalam.
With multiple back-to-back failures, Telugu producers are starting to see Tovino Thomas as a risky bet at the box office. While he still holds credibility in content-driven cinema, his recent track record with Telugu producers and banners is raising serious doubts.
Right now, this collaboration between Telugu banners and Tovino Thomas is not working. It is resulting in massive losses for all concerned.
