The Telangana Cricket Association (TCA) has reportedly sent legal notices to Vijay Deverakonda, Venkatesh, and cricketers Tilak Varma, Ambati Rayudu, and Mohammed Siraj for promoting the TG20 league. According to the TCA, the tournament is being conducted without approval from the BCCI.
However, another point to be noted is that the TG20 X handle, which has very few followers and limited credibility, introduced Vijay Deverakonda as a “Telangana Icon.” Many wondered whether it was even an official TG20 handle. Others questioned whether the account was created primarily to promote Vijay Deverakonda.
More importantly, such labels risk creating an unnecessary regional divide around personalities who have built their popularity across Telugu states and beyond. Branding an actor as a “Telangana Icon” inevitably raises questions and instead of uniting audiences, they invite comparisons, counter-labels, and debates about regional identity that serve little purpose.
The entire obsession with handing out titles like Telangana Icon, Andhra Legend, and similar labels sounds more like PR slogans than meaningful recognition.
Iconic status is usually associated with decades of contribution, sustained success, cultural influence, and achievements. The Telangana Icon title might simply be a PR exercise and not meant to be taken seriously. But it might have long-term repercussions.
Vijay Deverakonda is constantly surrounded by larger-than-life branding. Accepting the “Telangana Icon” label only adds to that image.
Should Vijay have accepted such a grand title in the first place? Maybe not. Public figures earn labels like “icon” through years of extraordinary achievement and lasting impact, not through promotional campaigns or marketing gimmicks.
Vijay himself is struggling through one of the worst phases of his career at the box office like many others. In such a situation, being projected as a “Telangana Icon” comes across as ironic and absurd.
Vijay has once again associated himself with exaggerated branding instead of focusing on rebuilding his career with strong films and consistent success. Telangana cricket could have been promoted without resorting to such self-glorifying labels.
