2023 is turning out to be a comparatively better year for the Indian film industry. Almost every industry has delivered some big hits. Even Bollywood has delivered a 1000-crore film with Pathaan.
But the Tamil industry has not been able to deliver much even this year until now. There were biggies like Varisu and Thunivu but they didn’t live up to the expectations.
Now the Tamil industry has pinned all its hopes on Mani Ratnam’s historical period drama, Ponniyin Selvan 2. The first part did huge business in Tamil Nadu and emerged as a big hit, however, the film failed in other languages.
Usually, the sequel of a successful film is expected to do better business at the box office as there is more hype due to the established brand. But going by the trends, PS 2 is struggling to match the numbers of its first part.
The bookings are poor not only in Tamil states but also in the US when compared to the first part. The talk in the industry is that the first part itself wasn’t very entertaining and so there is not much excitement for its sequel.
The first part did huge business because of the curiosity among the Tamil audience to witness their Chola history on the big screen. But now there is no such curiosity, and the dull narration in PS 1 killed the interest among the audience to watch its second part.
Now all eyes are on the public talk that will generate from its premiere shows. If the talk turns out to be supremely positive, then PS 2 has some chance at the box office, or else it will push the Tamil industry further into the darkness with unimaginable losses.
