The Andhra Pradesh municipal election results have delivered several unexpected outcomes. Candidates who were confident of winning chairperson and mayor posts suffered defeats in their own wards. Rebels who were denied party tickets proved their strength as independents. In Dharmavaram, a candidate even won by a single vote.
Ramachandrapuram Municipality witnessed one of the biggest surprises. TDP-led alliance chairperson candidate Medisetti Sesharao lost Ward 6 to a YSRCP candidate. YSRCP chairperson candidate Chintapalli Nageswara Rao also suffered defeat in Ward 10. TDP candidate Jaya won the ward. Both candidates aspiring for the chairperson’s post failed to secure victories in their own areas.
Nellore delivered another setback for YSRCP. Mayor candidate Anam Vijay Kumar Reddy lost his home division in Chintareddypalem. TDP candidate Abraham defeated YSRCP’s Joshua by 398 votes in Ward 5. The defeat in the candidate’s own division has become a major talking point.
Atmakur produced a different kind of result. Jana Sena aspirants Gaddam Sandhya and Kolagani Sirisha entered the fray as independents after failing to get party tickets. Sandhya won Ward 12 while Sirisha secured Ward 11. Their victories showed that local support can sometimes matter more than the official party ticket.
Dharmavaram witnessed a nail-biting contest in Ward 1. YSRCP candidate Ramakrishnamma reportedly defeated BJP candidate Sake Lakshmidevi by just one vote. Lakshmidevi challenged the result and demanded a recount. The outcome remains subject to that process.
Vijayawada has delivered another major boost to Jana Sena. Party candidate Vangaveeti Radhakrishna was leading the mayoral race by 113 votes in the latest counting update. Former mayor and YSRCP candidate Rayana Bhagyalakshmi was trailing in third place. Independent candidate and former IPS officer A.B. Venkateswara Rao was in second position. The contest has attracted considerable attention as Jana Sena looks to capture the mayor’s post in Bezawada.
In Pulivendula, Jagan protested, alleging polling irregularities and demanding repolling. But the final trends delivered a major setback to his party, with the TDP-led alliance taking control of his home turf.
Meanwhile, Nandikotkur produced a significant result for YSRCP leader Byrreddy Siddharth Reddy. The party secured a majority of wards in the municipality despite the TDP-led alliance being in power. His performance has drawn attention because of the contrast with the situation in Pulivendula, Jagan’s home turf. While Jagan faced controversy over the polling process, Byrreddy managed to secure a strong local result for his party.
The municipal elections have highlighted the importance of local leadership and voter connections. They have also exposed the risks of relying on political influence alone. From chairperson candidates losing their own wards to rebels winning without party backing, the results have delivered several lessons for both the ruling alliance and the opposition.
