The Andhra Pradesh municipal elections have become a crucial test for the ruling alliance and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). The mayoral contests in Kadapa and Eluru are drawing particular attention as both sides look to strengthen their position in urban politics.
Eluru Mayor Election: Can JanaSena Secure the Mayor’s Seat?
JanaSena leader Reddy Appalanaidu is contesting as the alliance’s common candidate against YSRCP candidate Ganta Mohan Rao.
Appalanaidu’s long experience in local politics and the support of TDP MLA Badeti Chanti and MP Putta Mahesh Yadav have strengthened the alliance campaign. Although the initial disagreement over seat allocation created tensions within the local TDP unit, coordination among alliance leaders has improved.
The YSRCP is relying on its traditional support among minority, BC and SC communities. However, concerns over the previous municipal administration and the drinking water contamination episode remain challenges for the party.
The alliance appears to have an organisational advantage across Eluru’s 62 divisions. Appalanaidu’s prospects will depend on how effectively the alliance converts this ground-level support into votes.
Kadapa Mayor Election: Alliance Targets the YSRCP Stronghold
Kadapa remains a politically significant battleground because of its long association with the YS family. The TDP-led alliance is looking to build on its recent gains after securing the district’s Zilla Parishad chairperson’s post following a gap of 27 years.
The reported unanimous victories in around 50 divisions have strengthened the alliance’s position. TDP candidate N. Suvarna is counting on local leadership and organisational support to secure the mayoral seat.
The YSRCP has fielded Bandi Deepti and is relying on its traditional support among minority, SC and BC communities.
The contest is especially important for the YSRCP because a setback in Kadapa would carry political significance beyond the municipal corporation. For the alliance, a victory would mark a major advance in the party’s traditional stronghold.
Four Cities to Watch: Vijayawada, Nellore, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam
The contests in Vijayawada, Nellore, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam will also shape the broader political picture. In Vijayawada, AB Venkateswara Rao’s entry could influence local electoral equations. In Nellore, coordination between TDP and JanaSena remains important. In Tirupati and Visakhapatnam, candidate strength and booth-level mobilisation will be key factors.Together, these four cities and the mayoral battles in Kadapa and Eluru will test the alliance’s organisational strength and the YSRCP’s ability to retain its traditional support base.
